The western zodiac divides the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun across the sky, into twelve equal 30-degree arcs. Each arc is named after a constellation that historically occupied that region. Claudius Ptolemy codified this system in his second-century treatise Tetrabiblos, establishing the framework that persists to this day. The twelve signs cycle through four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and three qualities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable), creating a repeating pattern of twelve unique combinations.
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) carry energy, initiative, and enthusiasm. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) ground the cycle in practicality and material awareness. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) move through intellect, communication, and social connection. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) navigate the realm of emotion, intuition, and depth. Each element appears exactly three times, paired once with each quality: Cardinal signs initiate, Fixed signs stabilize, Mutable signs adapt.
This tool assigns every sign an exactly equal probability of 1/12 (8.33%). In traditional astrology, a person's sign is determined by their birth date, a single fixed outcome from a non-uniform distribution concentrated around their birthday. Random selection removes that constraint entirely, making every sign equally accessible regardless of when you were born. Over many generations, the statistics panel tracks how closely the observed distribution approaches the theoretical uniform. The law of large numbers guarantees convergence, but short runs often produce streaks and clusters that surprise. That tension between theoretical equality and observed irregularity is the heart of probability.
